Are robots stealing our jobs? Examining robot-phobia as a job stressor in the hospitality workplace

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore robot-phobia as a source of occupational stress among hospitality employees in the context of increasing robotization in the industry. Design/methodology/approach The study sampled 321 lodging employees and 308 food service employees in the USA. An online panel company recruited the participants and administered an online survey. The study used various analytical methods, including structural modeling, t-tests and multi-group analyses. Findings The study results reveal that hospitality workers experience robot-phobia regardless of their sector or position. Robot-phobia causes job insecurity and stress, which increases turnover intention. These negative outcomes are more pronounced for those who interact more frequently with robots. Practical implications The study findings suggest that hospitality workers fear being replaced by robots in the near future. Therefore, hospitality organizations should offer adequate training and education on the advantages and drawbacks of robots and establish a supportive and collaborative work environment that values human–robot interaction. Originality/value This study offers new insights regarding human–robot interaction from the employee perspective by introducing the concept of robot-phobia in the hospitality workplace. A comprehensive picture of how hospitality employees confront the increasing presence of robots is provided in this study.

Effective Management of Construction Project Team: Identifying Leadership Qualities and Responsibilities

Leadership within construction project teams is a critical aspect of effective project management, yet a comprehensive understanding of essential leadership qualities and responsibilities remains elusive in academic discourse. This research addresses this gap by identifying key leadership characteristics crucial for the efficient management of construction teams. The study objectives include exploring essential leadership characteristics and filling the gap in the leadership literature specific to the construction industry. This study employed a qualitative data collection and analysis approach involving in-depth interviews with nine seasoned professionals from diverse construction-related roles and organizations. The findings reveal that emotional intelligence and relationship building are paramount for creating a collaborative and innovative work environment. Empowerment and inclusivity foster team initiative and diversity, although caution is warranted to mitigate potential negative impacts on role stress and unethical behavior. Recognition and appreciation of team contributions contribute to morale and motivation, while continuous learning encourages adaptability and growth. Precise goal setting and efficient communication are foundational for focused and responsive team dynamics, while delegation and trust-building strategies promote collaboration and cohesion. Finally, prioritizing employee well-being ensures a positive and healthy work environment conducive to sustained engagement. The study contributes valuable insights into leadership characteristics vital for constructing teams' optimal functioning and management. Evaluating the impact of embodying the coaching mindset on leaders’ paradigm of power

ABSTRACT The benefits of coach training for organisations and leaders are well-documented. Embodying the coaching mindset, defined as the development and maintenance of an open, curious, flexible, and client-centred attitude, is considered a core competency in coaching practice. Today, several organisations expect their leaders to act as coaches and are investing in developing their coaching skills. However, the importance and impact of embodying a coaching mindset on leaders’ paradigm of power and their leadership style has not received sufficient attention. To address this gap, this study employs a thematic approach to explore interview responses from 14 leaders from diverse professions from cities in India, South Africa, and the United States. This study shows that by embodying the coaching mindset, leaders experience a shift in their paradigm of power and leadership style (from a top–down approach, based on the power-over paradigm, towards greater power sharing, based on the power-with paradigm), perceived organisational role (from problem solving to facilitating), and their perception of their team members (from fragile and dependent to resourceful and whole). Furthermore, this study’s findings suggest that offering coach training to leaders could help them develop various competencies and expand their toolkit to create a more collaborative work environment.

The Impact of Teamwork on Job Satisfaction in Vietnam

This study investigates the impact of teamwork on job satisfaction in Vietnam, employing qualitative methods to explore this dynamic within the Vietnamese workforce. The research, grounded in interviews and questionnaires, delves into how collective work dynamics influence employee contentment, particularly in a cultural setting where collectivism is deeply ingrained. A significant positive correlation between teamwork and job satisfaction is revealed through the study, highlighting the importance of collaborative work environments for employee satisfaction. This correlation is substantiated by the strong internal consistency in the reliability analysis of both Job Satisfaction and Teamwork scales. Additionally, the research discusses various factors, including Vietnam's cultural values, rapidly developing economy, and a blend of Asian and Western management styles, contributing to this relationship. The study's findings resonate with the work of several authors in the field, confirming the essential role of teamwork in fostering a satisfied and productive workforce. However, it also acknowledges limitations such as sample diversity and methodological constraints, suggesting a blend of qualitative and quantitative methods and broader industry representation for future research.

Employee Performance Factors at PT. Boston Nusantara

Employees are valuable assets to the organization, and their efforts will help the company accomplish its mission. Companies that cannot manage and monitor their employees' performance will negatively impact the achievement of the company's goals and vision. Employee commitment supported with excellent work discipline and a high level of job satisfaction has an impact on employee performance. However, there are still employees that are uncommitted and lack strong work discipline. This study aims to investigate and identify some of the factors of employee performance at PT. Boston Nusantara, such as employee commitment, work discipline, and job satisfaction. The multiple correlation and the determination coefficient methods were employed in this study. The results showed that (1) Employee Commitment Variable had no effect on Employee Performance, (2). Employee Performance is influenced by Work Discipline Variable. (3). Employee Performance is influenced by Job Satisfaction Variable. (4). Simultaneously, Employee Performance is influenced by the variables of Employee Commitment, Work Discipline, and Job Satisfaction. The implication of this study is that the organization must develop a work environment that encourages employees to maintain persistent commitment, work discipline, and job satisfaction to create a collaborative work environment and achieve the company goals.

However, the significance value was.022, suggesting other factors may also influence perceptions about the collaborative work environment.

Making hybrid work for diverse staff in higher education: A behaviour change approach

AbstractDespite being considered the ‘new normal’ for many workers since the COVID‐19 pandemic, there is a dearth of applied research on hybrid working, especially in the context of inclusivity. This study uses the Behaviour Change Wheel to examine barriers, which hinder, and enablers, which help, to support hybrid working after the COVID‐19 pandemic and then identifies intervention strategies for its improvement. Data included 36 open‐ended questionnaires and 20 interviews from diverse (gender, sexual and ethnic identities; age; job role/grade scale; caregiving responsibilities and disability status) academic and professional staff at a large UK public research university, collected in May–July 2022. Barriers included the lack of technological skills, lack of clarity and application of the hybrid working policy, childcare and travel issues, no suitable space and equipment, managers' lack of understanding of specific needs, feeling lonely and isolated, and fears and uncertainty. Enablers included self‐management skills, purposeful office days, positive feelings, work/life balance, productivity and support from others. Issues related to equity and inclusivity were highlighted based on disability status, caregiving responsibilities, age and job role. Strategies are offered to improve hybrid working, such as training, organisational infrastructure and practices and policies to enable a collaborative, cooperative and inclusive hybrid work environment.

Development of Learning Models in Core Competency Practice Courses Department of Mechanical Engineering Education Manado State University

The learning process obtained from universities to develop students' soft skills is also influenced by practical experience in the field. To develop soft skills in students, they have been given theories and practices that support the lessons in higher education, so that students have experience that can be used as a basis when entering the world of work. This research aims to develop a practical learning model in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Education, Manado State University. This research is developing research to develop a practical learning model. The online practice development model uses six interactions, namely interactions between students and lecturers, students with material, lecturers with material, students with students, lecturers with other lecturers, and material with material, through synchronous/asynchronous media. The results of this research show that the product developed is very suitable to be implemented to support online practical learning for core courses in higher education. This research has produced an online learning model for core subject practice with a flexible blended learning strategy at a low cost for students of the Mechanical Engineering Education Study Program. The resulting conclusion is that this model has the advantage of being able to create an online collaborative work environment. Validation by experts is carried out qualitatively and quantitatively.

Perceptions about interpersonal relations, communication and work environment at IFPI - Campus Uruçuí

This research investigated the perception of the employees of the IFPI Campus Uruçuí on Interpersonal Relations, Communication and Work Environment. Using an online questionnaire, the necessary data for the quantitative and qualitative analyzes were collected. The results indicate predominantly positive interpersonal relationships, with 60.5% describing them as positive. Communication was evaluated positively by 89.6%, and 85.4% agreed that transparent communication influences trust in management. The work environment was considered good by 85.4%, however, 37.5% needed more flexibility to balance their personal and professional lives. Suggestions for improvement include wellness programs (64.9%), communication workshops (34.7%) and regular recognition (32.7%). The results highlight the importance of addressing interpersonal relationships and communication in the workplace to promote a healthy and productive environment. This study contributes to the understanding of these aspects and offers inputs for organizational improvement, highlighting the testimony of the participation and voice of the servers in the construction of a more positive and collaborative work environment.

Seeking the Optimisation of Public Infrastructure Procurement with NEC4 ECC: A Peruvian Case Study

The modern civil engineering and construction sector requires collaborative work environments, learning and trust among all parties involved, qualities that are absent in the Peruvian reality. This study, which is based on an extensive literature review, investigates this challenge. The study reflects upon (i) the current situation of public works procurement in Peru and (ii) the New Engineering Contract (NEC), which has recently been implemented in Peruvian Special Public Infrastructure Projects. Comparisons are presented between the characteristics, documentation and roles of these two systems, with the purpose of understanding and representing the advantages, disadvantages and possibilities of integrating the good contractual management practices of the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract into the traditional Peruvian State Contracting Law (Ley de Contrataciones del Estado: LCE). The research is validated through the case study of a high-impact road infrastructure project in the city of Arequipa, Peru, which revealed five main deficiencies from Peruvian procurement processes which hinder good contractual management and, also, facilitated an initial assessment of the challenges and improvement opportunities in public infrastructure procurement. Thus, a contribution is made to closing the knowledge gap regarding the implementation of the NEC4 ECC in public sector works.

Enhancing Employee Productivity Through Technology System AI-Based Approaches

This research aims to address the research gap regarding the use of AI in enhancing employee productivity. The study focuses on the role of AI in employee engagement and performance evaluation. The research adopts a quantitative approach, comparing various AI-based algorithms such as random forest, artificial neural network, decision tree, and XGBoost. The study proposes an ensemble approach called RanKer, which combines these algorithms to provide performance ratings for employees. The empirical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed model in terms of precision, recall, F1-score, and accuracy. Additionally, the research explores the impact of AI on employee engagement, highlighting the potential for real-time monitoring, sentiment analysis, and natural language processing to create a holistic work environment that promotes clarity, skill development, recognition, and wellness. The findings suggest that the combination of AI and employee engagement can lead to increased productivity, improved communication, and a collaborative work environment. This research contributes to the understanding of how AI can be leveraged to enhance employee productivity and provides recommendations for expanding the use of AI in employee engagement practices.

Exploring the rate of adoption and implementation depth of building information modeling (BIM): A case of Kuwait

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry in the State of Kuwait has witnessed a decline in efficiency with most projects going above budget and past project deadlines. Building Information Modeling (BIM) creates a collaborative common-data working environment between various stakeholders leading to improved productivity and efficiency while also minimizing technical challenges, and reducing design errors. Moreover, adding the concept of time to the model (4D BIM) for the purposes of planning and scheduling further optimizes inter-disciplinary collaboration. The first phase of this research aims to evaluate current BIM adoption rates and implementation depth in Kuwait through a survey distributed to organizations in the Union of Kuwait Engineering Offices and Consultant Houses. The results indicated that the rate of BIM adoption, represented by whether or not organizations have used BIM in previous/current projects is relatively high. Implementation depth, represented by the percentage of projects for which BIM is being used, is concluded to be low. In terms of willingness to adopt BIM, most organizations use and are considering using BIM as a visualization tool. The second phase aims to examine the applicability of generating predefined process templates for Tract Houses in the northwest Sulibikhat area constructed by the Public Authority of Housing Welfare (PAHW) used for 4D BIM. The Process Pattern Recognition approach is applied to a BIM-based construction schedule where the schedule is extracted, decomposed, processed, and filtered. Relevant and potentially relevant processes are identified and verified leading to defined process templates. This research contributes to the AEC industry by aiding in transitioning from current Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) practices to BIM technology.

F4ESS – a framework for interdisciplinary data-driven earth system science

ABSTRACT Earth system science is an interdisciplinary effort to understand the fundamentals and interactions of environmental processes. Interdisciplinary research is challenging since it demands the integration of scientific schemes and practices from different research fields into a collaborative work environment. This paper introduces the framework F4ESS that supports this integration. F4ESS provides methods and technologies that facilitate the development of integrative work environments for Earth system science. F4ESS enables scientists a) to outline structured and summarized descriptions of scientific procedures to facilitate communication and synthesis, b) to combine a large variety of distributed data analysis software into seamless data analysis chains and workflows, c) to visually combine and interactively explore the manifold spatiotemporal data and results to support understanding and knowledge creation. The F4ESS methods and technologies are generic and can be applied in various scientific fields. We discuss F4ESS in the context of the interdisciplinary investigation of flood events.

The research focuses on understanding the analysis of those key competences that foster professional performance in the field of human sciences. The importance of strategic management in the field of human management is highlighted, emphasizing learning and continuous development. The study also identifies challenges such as resistance to change and the relevance of training. The conclusion emphasizes the need for an integrated and collaborative approach to achieve a more humanized and effective management. This research is vital for the understanding and continuous improvement in the management of human talent, providing an enriched and multidimensional perspective in the context of the Human Sciences, thus fostering a more collaborative and resilient work environment.  

A Study of Professional Quality of Life and Environmental Factors among Pediatric Registered Nurses

Aim. This research study aims to investigate the professional quality of life (ProQOL) among pediatric registered nurses. Background. Professional quality of life encapsulates two fundamental components, namely, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, which comprises burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used in this study, which included 217 pediatric registered nurses. Self-administered questionnaires compiled sociodemographic and occupational characteristics before measuring Professional quality of life (Version 5) items were used to collect data. Results. Most respondents were 30 to 35 years of age (65%), female (99%), and hold a diploma certificate (63%). The ProQOL scores for compassion satisfaction was 35.9 (SD = 9.7), compassion fatigue (burnout) was 21.8 (SD = 9.64), and compassion fatigue (secondary traumatic stress) was 23.5 (SD = 9.7). A significant mean difference ( p < 0.001 ) were found in the ProQOL level based on environmental factors related to pediatrics and family. Conclusion. The results of this study show a moderate compassion satisfaction level, a low burnout level, and a moderate secondary traumatic stress level among pediatric registered nurses. Different related environmental factors that can impact the professional quality of life of pediatric registered nurses. Implications for Nursing Management. Pediatric nurses will benefit from a supportive work environment, which fosters collaboration and respect among nurses and their pediatric patients’ families to improve the health outcomes of pediatric patients. Hospitals should offer specialized training programs that address the unique needs of pediatric nursing, encompassing areas such as child development, communication techniques with children, and age-specific healthcare interventions. This will equip nurses with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide optimal care for pediatric patients. Also, the following support systems, such as regular debriefing sessions and counseling services, are established to help nurses cope with the emotional challenges they may encounter in their work and to foster a collaborative work environment that encourages effective teamwork among nurses and promotes positive relationships between nurses and the families of pediatric patients. This can be achieved by implementing interdisciplinary team approaches, regular team meetings, and open communication channels. In addition, to ensure that pediatric nurses have access to the necessary resources, such as up-to-date medical literature, technological tools, and equipment, to provide the best care possible. Adequate staffing levels should also be maintained to prevent excessive workloads, which can contribute to burnout and decreased job satisfaction.

Exploring the Challenges of Mathematics Teaching-learning Process at Primary School Level During COVID-19

Due to COVID-19 pandamic, students all over the country had to get detached from the normal flow of education. The non-government schools of the urban areas started online education using mainly Zoom and WhatsApp media platforms. This study explores the challenges experienced by both teachers and students during the COVID-19 pandemic while involved in the mathematics teaching-learning process. The study followed an exploratory case study research design. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews via zoom/ mobile phone meetings with 10 primary school teachers and 20 students of primary level and analysed thematically. Also, 10 online primary mathematics classes were observed for data triangulation. This study explored three perspectives curriculum-related challenges, teacher’s challenges and students’ challenges. It is found that appropriateness of the content, alignment of contents concerning time schedules, curriculum objectives and teaching strategies proposed in the curriculum are the major curriculum-related challenges faced by teachers while conducting mathematics classes online. Besides, delivering the lecture, managing the class, assessing students, teachers’ lack of technological knowledge and availability of physical facilities were also identified as challenges in terms of teachers’ perspective. Another finding of this study is that students faced different challenges (e.g. technological, motivational, collaborative work, homework, feedback, and home environment) while learning through an online platform. Based on the study’s findings, the practical implications for academic institutions, curriculum developers, teachers’ trainers and policymakers have been articulated. The Effectiveness of Interpersonal Communication in Hybrid Learning-Based Learning at Universities

Online learning has changed so that the process of interaction and communication to convey learning material between students and students and students with other students becomes more effective; in this case, a learning innovation known as Hybrid Learning emerges. This study uses a qualitative method. The data used in this study are primary data and secondary data. The results of this study suggest that effective interpersonal communication helps students build better social skills, such as speaking in public or working in teams. These skills are critical in an increasingly open and collaborative work environment. Hybrid learning-based learning also facilitates the development of creativity in students. Through an open and flexible learning experience, students can gain the ability to think creatively and create new solutions to the problems they face.
